Woodland Winter Family Portraits in Berks County PA

2/21/24

I just can’t believe we finally had a good snow this winter. My dreams of a snowy photo session came true! We got hit with snow just a few days before my session with the Miller family. There were still patches of yet-to-be melted snow all along the trail of pine trees. It really set the scene to look like we were in Colorado or something. These photos were scheduled in time for Leo’s 1st birthday. It’s crazy to think I’ve photographed this family’s maternity photos, newborn portraits, family photos at 6 months old, and now a year. I love getting to watch families grow like this!

Most families opt for photos in the spring or fall seasons and that’s totally fine. However, there is something special about switching up the norm for family portraits in the midst of winter. Now, there were a few ways we needed to make preparations for when photographing in the cold weather. It is so important to layer up. I want you to feel comfortable and confident thoughout your photo session and it can be so hard to enjoy the experience when you’re not properly bundled up.

As much as I love a good dress and heels, you’re going to want to skip it this time of year. The best way to build your look in the winter time is to incorporate a coat into your outfit. This family coincidentally had matching olive green jackets which really pulled the whole color scheme together. When choosing a pair of shoes, I recommend wearing a warm pair of boots. You’re going to want something that you can pair with thick, fuzzy socks. Plus, boots are great in the snow or mud.

What’s an outfit without accessories? You can really lean into the winter style and stay extra warm by pairing your coat with a winter hat, mittens, or a scarf. I highly recommend adding these to your little one’s outfit to make sure they are as warm as can be. Another tip of mine is to wear a heated vest underneath your coat. I wear one of these all the time for winter sessions! You could even pick up some hoot hands from the sporting goods store to keep in your pockets.

Is this making you want to brave the cold for a winter family portrait session with me? Let’s get together!
