Sunset Beach

Cape May, New Jersey

This past Summer, I had the chance to travel to the Jersey Shore for a family photo session. This was a great opportunity for a fun day trip with my boyfriend. We spent the day in Wildwood before my golden hour session. I am always up for a photo shoot vacation! I’m planning to stay in Cape May for the weekend this year too for a few sessions on the beach. My boyfriend and I spent our afternoon playing mini golf, grabbing ice cream, and riding the tram car. We soaked in the Summer sun until it was time to get set for my session.

To end the day, I met the Shaul family at Sunset Beach in Cape May, New Jersey. It is well known for being the best spot to watch the sunset in New Jersey. We settled on this location because it gave us the chance to include both the sunset and the ocean in the background of these photos.

On the East Coast, you would usually have to wake up early to see the sunrise on the beach. Sunset Beach is technically a bay, so we were able to see the gorgeous sun hit the water at sunset. We began photographing while the sun was low on the horizon at 7:30pm. This way the sunlight wasn’t too harsh and bright, but we got a beautiful golden glow from the sky.

This extended family session included grandparents, aunt and uncles, along with Sarah’s immediate family. With sessions like this, I love photographing each individual family or couple as well as the whole family. It’s like 3 sessions in one! We had a lot of laughs and fun while passing the little one around for each family member to pose with. He was truly the star of the show. I can only imagine how sweet these photos will be to look back on for the Shaul family.

Something I really loved about their session is the outfits. This family really nailed it. They stuck to a color scheme, but also had a consistency in fabrics. The linens and flowy fabrics are so cohesive with the beach style. I included their photos as a great example for What To Wear To Your Family Photo Session on the blog. They were able to coordinate without being too matchy. The boys button downs had differing patterns and sleeve lengths. Then, Sarah and her sister wore similar dresses with different styles.
