My Home Studio
This early morning newborn session was set in my home studio. I created a warm and cozy environment for baby Leo. My white seamless paper backdrop was up with arranged pillows and a white blanket. I placed two pillows side by side with another pillow tucked underneath for a head rest. It is important to keep a newborn’s head elevated for their portraits. I followed a photographer friend’s advice by playing white noise throughout the studio. The place was ready to welcome a baby in for their photos.
Leo arrived in an adorable pair of blue and white striped pjs. It was the perfect onesie for a baby boy. His mom set him on the pillows I laid out and she sat next to him for comfort. We eased the newborn into the session and I snapped a few portraits while he was wiggling around adorably.
After this gorgeous set of photos, Leo turned things around. We started noticing some goofy facial expressions from him. He was not feeling it anymore and desperately needed to, well, pass gas. This is totally normal during a newborn photo session. That’s why it is so important to be patient and allow plenty of time. We gave Leo a nice break and tried again.
Unfortunately for us, Leo still was not having it. Let’s just say it was a rough morning for myself and mom and dad. There were plenty of cries, a few smiles, and quite a few toots to go around. Luckily, we were able to capture some beautiful photos between the cries. I made sure to use our time wisely. When Leo was upset, I captured some detail photos of his toes, hand, etc. Then, during those rare moments that he was able to relax, I was able to get the sweetest shots of him.
Leo’s parents brought along a nice collection of props for his newborn session. We had a few outfit changes. My favorite was the little llama outfit! They also wanted to incorporate their hospital bracelets, crystals, and a couple llama toys. I love personalizing sessions for my clients. Bringing along mementos is a great way to do that.
Despite the long, tiresome morning, I am beyond happy with the results. Leo’s newborn gallery completely exceeded my expectations. I am so glad his parents stuck it out with me. I cannot wait to watch this little one grow!
