We don’t have to stop creating just because it’s winter. Life doesn’t always line up with perfect seasons—and maternity, newborn, and family sessions rarely wait for ideal weather. That’s exactly why indoor studio photography is such a great option during the colder months.
My home studio in Douglassville, PA is designed to be a comfortable, stress-free space for photos year-round. Using solid-color backdrops allows for a clean, simple setting that keeps the focus where it belongs—on you and your connection as a family. I’ve spent a lot of time perfecting my studio lighting setup to create a soft, even look that flatters every session. Because I use professional artificial lighting, we never have to worry about gloomy skies or unpredictable winter forecasts.
A Cozy Studio Space for Families & Maternity Sessions
My studio is a small, intimate home space, which makes it ideal for:

Due to space constraints, the studio comfortably accommodates up to two adults and three children, making it a great fit for families with young kids or parents-to-be.

Studio sessions tend to go especially smoothly in the winter, and here’s why:
- The studio is warm and cozy, so kids are comfortable (no cold noses or frozen fingers)
- The small space means no long walks or searching for photo spots
- A half bath right next door allows for easy outfit changes and quick bathroom breaks
- Sessions typically move a bit quicker, which helps keep children engaged and on task
A Winter Studio Session Favorite
One of my favorite sessions photographed in my Douglassville studio took place this past winter. We had time to use two backdrops and two maternity dresses for mom, which added great variety to the final gallery. (You’ll find links to her Amazon dresses below!)
The family chose a simple, earthy color palette for their outfits, which created a beautifully cohesive look across the entire session. We were able to capture:
- Family portraits
- Couples maternity images
- Individual portraits of their daughter
- Maternity solo portraits for mom
The first backdrop, a soft beige tone, is one of my go-to studio backgrounds. It’s timeless, neutral, and works beautifully for classic family portraits. For the second maternity look, we switched things up creatively by using a black backdrop. The contrast between the dark background and mom’s off-white lace dress created a more dramatic, moody feel—these maternity portraits are some of my absolute favorites.
