How to Build a Cohesive Look Without Stressing Out
Choosing outfits for your family session doesn’t have to be overwhelming—and it definitely doesn’t mean everyone has to match perfectly. The goal is to look coordinated, comfortable, and effortlessly put together. Here’s my simple, photographer-approved guide to styling your family for photos.
1. Build Your Color Scheme
The easiest way to start is by choosing one standout outfit that inspires the rest.
Often this ends up being mom’s outfit (because let’s be honest—women’s clothing can be the hardest to shop for. The struggle is so real).
But it can truly be any piece you fall in love with:
- A patterned dress for your daughter
- A cozy flannel for your son
- A textured sweater you already own
Once you’ve picked that “base” outfit, use it to guide your palette.
If it’s patterned, pull a few of the colors from it and sprinkle them throughout the rest of the family’s outfits.
Think coordinating, not matching.
Instead of everyone wearing the same exact color, choose 3–4 tones that blend well together. This creates a natural, organic, “accidentally on-theme” look that photographs beautifully.
2. Real Family Examples
Here are two outfits from one of my recent family sessions in Boyertown, PA that totally nailed it—both cohesive and full of personality.
Outfit Set 1: Soft & Casual Blues
This family chose a simple blue-based palette (a very popular option!).
- The daughter’s jumper was the focal point—light blue with cream florals that set the tone for everyone else.
- Dad tied the palette together with a blue and cream/tan flannel and light khaki pants.
- Mom balanced the patterns with a deeper blue romper, keeping things coordinated without being too matchy.
The whole look felt relaxed, soft, and perfectly casual for an outdoor session.

Outfit Set 2: Bold Fall Colors
Their second outfit set leaned a bit more formal and embraced richer tones.
- Once again, the daughter’s dress became the centerpiece: a bright marigold color with plum-pink floral accents.
- Dad accented the pattern beautifully with a plum button-down—such a fun, unique choice that really made the look pop.
- Mom chose a deeper shade of marigold, wearing a gorgeous burnt-orange velvet dress that added texture and richness.
These outfits blended perfectly with the fall leaves and golden sunset light. Seriously chef’s kiss.

3. Where to Shop to Get the Look
