How to prepare for a photo shoot with your toddler | Berks County Photographer

6/27/24

One of the biggest challenges of lifestyle and family photography is working with kids, especially toddlers. I’d argue it’s the most challenging aspect. As someone whose career began through the art of taking photos and the business side of things, directing clients and working with kids came secondary for me. This is why I’ve put SO much time and energy into building that skill. It’s something I’m proud to consider myself a pro at now.

So many parents worry how their kiddo is going to follow a photographer’s directions. It’s a big reason why parents with young kids are hesitant to book a photo shoot. It’s so important to work with a photographer that knows what they’re doing and has the tools and experience to adapt to energetic children.

Now, what is my approach to working with toddlers?

We’ve all heard of the terrible twos. Once these kids hit the 2 year mark, that once calm and interested baby becomes a bit tougher to manage. Truthfully, you can’t change their natural curiosity and energetic selves. It’s a part of who they are at this age. They’re discovering their autonomy and want to exercise their ability to say “no”. We have to adapt and work with them.

When it comes to kiddos in that 2-4 year old age range, keeping them happy and interested is a battle. Things can go south very quickly so I tend to photograph super fast in these scenarios. A perfect smile or adorably candid moment can be very short lived so it’s important to me to always be on my toes. I never want to force a stiff pose and risk causing a meltdown. This session in particular was a part of my 30 minute collection, yet I got everything I needed in literally 10 minutes. (I was surprised, myself!)

I try to work at the same pace as your toddler. This means we’re probably in one spot or position for only about 1 minute at a time. For the duration of this morning session under the pier, we basically just ran around following Wyatt. Energy was high and we didn’t force anything. If Wyatt wanted to check things out, we let him. My goal is for the kids to feel autonomous by guiding fun prompts and allowing them to explore. I think of it more so as playing. If the kids see me as a friend, they’re more inclined to let me into their space and allow me to offer suggestions.

My lifestyle sessions are all about enjoying the experience and making memories with your family. Don’t worry about forcing a smile, we’ll mix those posed shots in between the fun ones! Your goal as the parent is to think of things that make your toddler giggle at home and bring them into our session. This could be as simple as a song or a silly dance. Some kiddos love fist bumps or giggle when dad pretends to take their nose. It’s truly unique to every kid. While you’re playing, I’ll guide you through where to stand and offer any prompts. I’ll always reassure you that things are looking good and give you notes for what to try next.

If this gave you a sense of relief on the subject of taking photos with your toddler, let’s start chatting! I’d love to capture memories for you and your family!
