Oh how I love golden summer nights! The heat wave is finally over on the East Coast. I was so excited to photograph this family session in nice 70 degree weather. We chose a favorite location of mine, the Daniel Boone Homestead. This is my ultimate golden hour photo location. I simply adore the tall, green grass here at this time of year. We even caught a few pops of yellow and purple wildflowers in this spot. Everything about this local Berks County location was vibrant.
This wonderful, fun family put so much effort into planning their yearly family photos. They followed my Style Guide to a T and sent me their outfit mood board. So cute! They chose a bright and colorful color palette for their summery session. I love all the blues, pinks, and peachy tones. They chose a good mix of patterns, staples, and varying clothing styles. My biggest piece of advice when it comes to styling your family photo outfits is to coordinate, rather than match. The results give off an organic and almost accidentally aesthetic look.
For this evenings session, we brought together grandparents, uncles, siblings, and teenagers. I love a good family reunion photo shoot. This photo session served as a 50th anniversary gift to the grandparents. There is no better gift than capturing memories!
To start off the night, I always begin with the group photo. It is essential to make sure this one is perfection! I like to keep my posing simple and natural for larger family sessions like this. We captured a simple smile photo and then I prompted the everyone to look at one another for a more candid look. Then the whole group snuggled in for a group hug pose. After getting the big family photo, we divided into immediate families/couples. I was able to try a few more unique prompts with the girls involved. I got some giggles out by prompting a tickle fight. This is something I usually do with the little one, but it might be more fun with the teens! Then, I asked the four of them to hold hands and walk towards the camera for some movement.
Next, the girls are up for sister portraits. I gave them some fun action prompts like the drunk walk and hold holding. I was able to get a little more creative with their individual portraits. I wanted these shot to look like a senior portrait session. I demonstrated how to pose with their hand on their hip for the ideal portrait. They were totally naturals at this! Then, I brought out my throw blanket for some seated giggly photos.
To end the night, we photographed a few more family combinations for fun. We had such gorgeous lighting and perfect weather that I was beyond excited to take my camera home to start editing.
