Tips for a Calm Newborn Photo Session From A Berks County, PA Photographer

2/08/26

Preparing for your newborn photos can feel overwhelming — especially in those early days at home. As a newborn photographer in Berks County, PA, my goal is to create a calm, baby-led experience that feels relaxed and stress-free for your entire family.

Whether you’re planning an in-home newborn session or a cozy studio session, a little preparation goes a long way. Newborn sessions are meant to be slow, gentle, and completely baby-led. If you’re feeling a little nervous about how your session might go, you’re not alone.

Below are my best tips to help your newborn photography session flow smoothly and comfortably.

1. Aim For Their First Two Weeks (If You Can)

Schedule your newborn session within your newborn’s first 2 weeks is ideal. Babies tend to be sleepier during this window, which makes it easier to capture those peaceful, snuggly images everyone loves.

That being said, we are 100% on baby’s timeline. Sometimes plans shift, and that’s completely okay. I always build flexibility into newborn sessions so we can move at your baby’s pace. I like to set a tentative date about 2 weeks after your due date so we can adjust after baby arrives. It’s not uncommon to need some extra time in the hospital, too. So, don’t worry if early plans go out the window!

2. A Full Belly Is the Best Start

One of the best ways to start your session on the right foot is making sure your baby is well fed beforehand. A full tummy often means a calm, sleepy baby and that helps us ease right into photographing. Feeding right before our session, even if it’s not a full bottle, is a big help.

If your baby needs to eat during the session, we’ll absolutely take breaks. There’s no such thing as “too many pauses” during a newborn shoot.

3. Swaddles Are Your Best Friend

Swaddling is magic for newborn sessions. Wrapping your baby snugly in a soft swaddle helps them feel secure and often encourages sleep. Most babies are calmer when they’re cozy and held tight, which makes a big difference during photos.

It’s a great fail safe if they’re feeling fussy after catching those little details like the toes wiggling and fingers moving.

4. Keep the Environment Calm and Cozy

White noise can be helpful during a newborn session. A soft sound machine or gentle background noise can help keep your baby relaxed and settled.

I also keep voices low and the environment calm to reduce stimulation. Newborn sessions aren’t rushed — sometimes they can take up to two hours, and that’s totally normal. Patience is truly the key to getting the photos you love.

5. I Always Start With Baby Solo Photos

I always begin newborn sessions by photographing your baby on their own. This allows us to capture those sweet, sleepy solo images first. If your baby becomes fussy later, we can then move into family photos, where mom or dad can hold and comfort them while we continue capturing meaningful moments.

This approach keeps the session flowing smoothly and takes pressure off both you and your baby.
