Kutztown University of Pennsylvania

I recently had the most honorable opportunity to photograph Kutztown University of Pennsylvania’s Dance Team portraits for the 2022 season. These girls were simply a joy to work with. I had so much fun seeing their dance poses in action through my camera lens.

Team Captain, Morgan Harrar (photographed above), reached out to me insisting that the KU Dance Team deserves a little more spotlight- I couldn’t agree more! Trust me when I say these girls could be models. For location we settled on the landmark of KU campus, Old Main. It is truly the center point of Kutztown University.

We began our afternoon with individual photos. Each dancer came up one by one to photograph their headshot and dance pose. While they were quite nervous to start, the eboard members volunteered to set an example. For all the headshot photos, the girls held their poms at their waist while being sure to still show off their KU Dance tops.

After snapping their simple headshot, we got into some fun dance poses. Each girl got a chance to choose their favorite, or signature, pose for this shot. I photographed this as a wide, full-body shot and a close up, 3/4 body shot. This was by far the most fun part of our day. I am a creative photographer at heart, so being able to capture these unique poses and laugh with the girls was so enjoyable. 

Next we photographed their epic group photo as well as their eboard member photos. I encouraged the taller girls to stand with poms up in the back. Our shorter girls stood in front of them or knelt in the middle. I made sure to keep our eboard members up front and team captain, Morgan Harrar, front and center.

Lastly, I wanted to give the girls a chance to get buddy photos taken. We had so much time left over at the end so I was happy to offer the girls some photos with their friends. Although we had to beat the rain to capture them, it just made it that much more fun to run around and photograph. I cannot wait to work with these girls again in the future!
