The spring cherry blossom and magnolia tree season is almost here! I’m so excited for all the photo sessions. These pastel florals are absolutely stunning for your family photos, senior portraits, or a maternity photo session. Are you ready for pink flowering trees, later sunsets, and warmer weather? Let’s talk about when these florals will be at their peak.
Magnolia trees are native to North America so you’ll see these trees all over Berks County, PA. My favorite magnolia tree blooms outside of local gem, Brakeman’s Cafe in Boyertown. These flowers don’t stay for too long, only about 1-2 weeks. They begin flowering around the first week of April and continue into the second week. If you’re looking to schedule a photo session with these florals, I recommend sometime around the first weekend of April.
Cherry blossoms trees are not native to the USA so these floral blooms can vary. They bloom for a much shorter time in comparison to magnolia trees because of their delicate petals. Pennsylvania’s April winds can really shorten their lifespan. In the Eastern PA region, the cherry blossoms bloom anywhere within the 3rd and 4th weeks of April. The 3rd weekend of the month is usually your safest bet for scheduling a photo session arund their bloom period.
Where can we see the cherry blossoms in Eastern PA? My favorite place to catch the cherry blossoms among other spring blooms is the Reading Public Museum in Berks County. You get the best of both worlds with cherry blossoms, of course, but also the tulips and blue bells. I also love the arcitechure at this location, which is an added bonus. You can also see the cherry blossoms in bloom at the Bethlehem Area Public Library in Lehigh County and in Everhart Park in West Chester, PA. If you’re willing to take the trip, I’d love to photograph a sunrise session in Washington DC when the cherry blooms peak there during the first 2 weeks of April.
When thinking about what to wear for a cherry blossom photo session, pink is the obvious choice. Spring is a great time of year to bring out those pastel color palettes and floral patterns. I find that sage greens, shades of blue, and cream colors compliment all pink tones. Spring is usually the season that my clinets tend to lean into more formal-style clothing pieces. Most locations with cherry blossoms tend to be museums or gardens with concrete or brick sidewalks so heels are not a problem.
